ABOUT SCOTLANDS PARK
A short history about our bowls club
The Scotlands Park Bowls Club has a rich history dating back to 1962 when a group of local miners and quarrymen came together with the idea of forming a bowls club. With the council's support, a plot of land was allocated in the Scotlands playing field and a state-of-the-art bowling green was constructed, complete with concrete ditches and a watering system, along with a small clubhouse.
The club officially became affiliated with the Leicestershire Bowls Association in 1963, and competitions were organized and played under the name of Scotlands Park Bowls Club, which quickly gained recognition throughout the county as "The Scotlands." The club's membership grew over the years, peaking at 100 in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
However, membership eventually declined, and after years of anti-social behavior, the final straw came in 2016 when the club was vandalized and forced to close. The aging membership decided to call it quits, leaving the club to remain dormant for several years.
Fortunately, in 2019, several Northwest Leicestershire councillors campaigned to reopen the club, recognizing the potential of its existing green and facilities. After many alterations and extensive advertising, the club reopened for the 2021 season, welcoming both new and old members to enjoy the sport of lawn bowls once again.
